“My focus is to pursue health, maintain wellness, prevent disease and treat the individual to the best of my ability, using all the tools and resources available.  At Encompass Health Direct, you and I are in charge of the decisions, not the managed care network.”      Robert Nelson, MD

Our practice model, which is to simplify and personalize medical care, is a long over-due alternative to the complex and often impersonal layers of corporate culture that seems to be dominating the healthcare market place.

cropped-timeforchange-scaledviewed1.jpgI think most of you will agree that change is desperately needed in health care today; and I don’t think Washington, DC or Wall Street has the answers.

The solution is you and I. What a concept! Imagine a one-to-one interdependent, trust-based relationship with your doctor; one in which he or she seeks out your business, values you as a patient and is humbled by your trust! I recall a time long ago when that was the rule, not the exception.

I have come to the conclusion that our present system of healthcare is so dysfunctional that it can’t be reformed from working in it. We, as doctors and patients, have to make our own health care market place; one that is so attractive compared to what we have now that the current system eventually dies of loneliness, because no one participates!

I believe we need to RESTORE health care, not REFORM it. That really sums up our message in one sentence. So, if you find what we are doing here refreshing and attractive, please give us the opportunity to earn your trust by joining our practice as a patient, and a client!

Thank you & best wishes,

Dr. Bob

My goal is always to help people get to the highest degree of health possible.  While I will manage disease, I would rather pursue health.  I believe that the aggressive pursuit of health is the best prevention of disease.  That sounds so obvious, but that simple truth holds a lot of promise for good health!

The relationship between a Patient & Doctor should be collaborative and cooperative on every level.  Research and anecdotal evidence indicate patients with open satisfying relationships with their physician are generally healthier and have better outcomes from setbacks in their health.  I believe in giving the best advice, counsel and treatment options that I can muster to my patient’s advantage.  I can be a guide, scout, counselor, coach or even a “drill sergeant” if needed.   In the end, how my patients decide to pursue their health and wellness is up to them.

I welcome my patients to challenge me with questions and to demand evidence, or at least a logical explanation, for my opinions. Working directly for my patients outside the constraints of an insurance network allows me to research and advocate on their behalf, which is one of the most satisfying endeavors a physician can undertake.

  1. I believe that only people can possess values, not organizations.
  2. I believe in treating people the way I would want to be treated.
  3. I believe in the sanctity of life; and that we are a soul with a body, not a body with a soul.
  4. I believe that ethical and moral behavior can’t be legislated or coerced.  It stems from a strong internal belief that there is a standard of behavior that exists apart from our own existence and defined by God’s nature.
  5. I believe the individual is more important than the “collective”.  There can be no collective good without acts of good individuals.
  6. I believe that acting locally, while thinking globally, helps us keep focused.
  7. I believe all individuals were created equal and endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
  8. I believe that an unencumbered Doctor-Patient relationship is the essence of good medical care.
  9. I value and believe in the sovereignty and good judgment of the individual patient to seek care as they see fit at a transparent price and in the absence of insurance network constraints and government interference.
  10. I value building professional relationships based on trust and respect.

Bio’s are boring; we all know that. So I listed the important stuff below: Short and sweet.

Yes, you should care that I graduated from a highly ranked medical school and that I had top-notch post-graduate training, which I did; but most of us don’t judge our doctor from that angle. We judge them based on how we are able to communicate with them, and whether we feel they are engaged and if they care. And that’s probably the way it should be.

So, I won’t bore you with a detailed professional resume. If you want to know more, just ask! Suffice it to say, I have nearly 25 years of experience on the front lines of primary care and urgent care medicine with a little bit of emergency room medicine experience and 3 years of group private practice thrown in. I’m comfortable taking care of a wide assortment of routine medical problems, with a strong skill set in childhood illnesses, respiratory conditions such as asthma & allergies, lacerations, fractures, and routine general medicine problems. If you have something I can’t figure out or help you with, I won’t hesitate to refer you to a specialist.

My wife and I live here in the Cumming area. We love it here. We have 11 grandchildren between us, spread out all over the United States; and who we don’t see nearly enough.

Well, that’s me! I would be honored to be your doctor and I look forward to meeting you.
